Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, and an antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors.
It stabilizes dopamine activity rather than fully blocking it, reducing both excess and deficiency effects.
This mechanism leads to improvement in psychotic symptoms with fewer extrapyramidal side effects.
It also modulates serotonin pathways, contributing to mood stabilization and antidepressant effects.
Clinically, it is used in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and as adjunct therapy in major depressive disorder.
